Gender Analysis of Christian Magazine IN! - dívčí svět

The thesis presents a qualitative gender analysis of a Christian girls' magazine "IN! - dívčí svět" and explores how femininity is constructed in the magazine and how the results of the analysis can be interpreted using feminist theology. An important starting point of the thesis is the belief in the existence of asymmetric power relations. The study of the literary-media text, thus, allows showing whether the power relations are strengthened or subverted through it. The main analytical category of this thesis is gender. In the theoretical-methodological part, the basic concepts and methods used during the analysis are presented. In the analytical part, the method of resistant reading and critical discourse analysis is used. The analytical part consists of fifteen selected texts. Finally, the collected data are summarised.

The Discourse Analysis of "Mamet Speak": The Display of Power in Language and the Limits of Language

This master's thesis analyses the following plays by contemporary American playwright, David Mamet: Oleanna (1992) and Glengarry Glen Ross (1983). The thesis deals with the discourse that was used and the question of the characters' power relations, which are examined from a sociolinguistic point of view. Firstly, the thesis defines power relations according to Michel Foucault and shows that communication can serve as an instrument of how to act upon others. The thesis is primarily based on the theory of Deborah Tannen, who observes the ambivalent nature of solidarity and power, and introduces her five areas of interest: indirectness, interruption, silence versus volubility, topic raising and verbal conflict. The thesis examines a selection of dialogues from the plays in order to elucidate how these aspects further influence the actions and behaviour of the characters, and explores the effects of the utterances including the effects of power. The thesis also deals with the question of failure of communication, which is examined from the perspective of Roman Jakobson's functions of language, Paul Grice's cooperative principle and Geoffrey N. Transformation of Power and Social Control: The Concept of CSR and Its Market Use

ANOTATION The theoretical thesis should point out the development and transformation of power, its mutual relationships and social control, all through discourse analysis of political practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Except of other theoretical thinkers, for example later Nikolas Rose, Michel Foucault mostly contributed to these phenomenons. Because power is socially constructed phenomenon and it depends on particular context, we are going to follow development and transformation of power on the concept of CSR. Concept of CSR will give us the frame for this analysis and helps us to recognize moments in CSR practices where the Foucault's model of governing, the concept of power and knowledge, discursive and disciplination practices are present. Also Rose's concepts of market texhniques and rise of new subject and subjectivity. These terms help us to cover economical and market practices on the background of firm's social and enviromental responsibility. Anton Jasusch. The Artist as a Device of Power Relations

Diploma thesis examines how the artist and his work can become a device of power relations illustrated by the example of one artist - Anton Jaszusch. The context of his work has changed several times over time, changing the interpretation of his work. Changes of the context were indirectly influenced by the political - social situation, which affected also the inclusion of his work in the canon of modern art in Slovakia. The thesis closely reviews the literature on the history of art from the period of the first Czechoslovak Republic until now. This review inquires the emergence and development of the phenomenon of Košice modernism and adoption of Anton Jaszusch as its leading artist. The work also analyzes available documents (periodicals, catalogs, articles and publications) in detail to refer to the aforementioned changes in the context of Jaszusch's work and its position as an device of power relations. The thesis examines the documents from three periods related to shifts in the context of Jaszusch's work. It begins in mid-twenties when an exhibition of Jaszusch's post- war series of paintings in Bratislava sparked controversy about "Slovakness" of his work. Thesis Selected aspects of the production of embodiment in tv commercials works with an assumption that some tv commercials represent specific modality of discursive mechanisms of sexual representation. This thesis applies the works of M. Foucault and P. Bourdieu to semiotic analysis of chosen advertisements. Assuming that advertisements are using body and sexual motives as one of the instruments of power to affect the target groups. Main focus of this thesis is in introduction of discursive models that are used in advertising. Goal of the theoretical part is to introduce philosophical and sociological ideas and theories relating to perception of physicality, sexuality, power relations and question of subjectivism. The thesis also shows how the role of a body was perceived in different historicals eras and how the ways of use of body and embodiment has gradually developed in terms of power affection. Goal of the practical part is to analyze and interpret the acknowledgments from theoretical part on concrete examples. Analysis of power relations and gender stereotypes in writings of Gabriela Preissová - Gazdina roba and Její pastorkyňa

This thesis discusses the conception of power relations and gender stereotypes in Gabriela Preissová's literary masterpiece - Gazdina roba and Její pastorkyňa. The analysis employs the concept of power as an analytical categoryand draws on Michel Foucault's theories. The thesis further examines the discourse in which the main characters find themselves. The analysis of male and female characters focuses on the position of the main character and also on the ways in which female protagonists become influenced by their male partners. Selected characters are also interpreted by using Foucault's concept of bio-power and a special attention is paid to the subject type of homo oeconomicus. The thesis attempts to answer the question, whether the discussed literary characters are "disciplined bodies", or whether they embody a subversion of the (gender) system. Part of the text is also dedicated to the comparison of male and female characters in both Preissová's works as to whether they do or do not comly with traditional images of "masculinity" and "femininity" (and related gender stereotypes), or how many of them represent resisting or (in the case of some female protagonists) collaborating entities. Small country turning left: Ecuador's economic development before and after 2007 in the context of current political change in South America.

Leftist governments are not very popular in media. However, South America seems to have ignored the critics and has elected several left wing governments in the recent years. This is also the case of Ecuador, a relatively small country, which has gone through interesting political and economic reforms since 2007. This thesis will try to evaluate the economic performance of Ecuador after this change happened, within the context of the general regime change to leftist or anti-neoliberal policies in the rest of the South American continent. The performance will be first compared between the countries according to their government's ideology through an econometric analysis of a group of economic, socio-economic and perceptual variables. After that, a more detailed analysis will be performed on Ecuador's indicators. Interestingly, results show an overall improvement of economic and socio-economic conditions in the countries under the leftist rule, which relies on a strong civic support, compared to the countries still following the neoliberal policies. The case study of Ecuador pretends to provide an example. of a successful performance since the country turned left in 2007.While this area is rarely analyzed, this thesis contributes some knowledge to the field about effectiveness of the current political economy in Latin America Moreover, it contributes to undermine critics often widespread in the media in cooperation with certain states and organizations for keeping the current unequal distribution of power and wealth intact.
